Scholastic Art Awards
Dan Shanklin, SHS Art Teacher
Congratulations to the Sandy High School art students who participated in the 2018 Portland Metro Scholastic Art Awards, which is part of a national competition to recognize student artwork. It was a record-breaking year for the Portland Metro competition, with over a thousand more entries than last year’s competition. This was Sandy High’s seventh year competing, and Sandy students did very well. On average, only 30% of students entering the competition receive awards for their artwork, but 60% of Sandy students were recognized.
Founded in 1923, The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards are the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S. and the largest source of scholarship funds for young artists and writers. Each year, ambitious students in grades 7–12 from across the nation and in American schools abroad submit more than 330,000 works of art and writing to be evaluated by visual and literary arts professionals, educators, and scholars. There are three award categories: honorable mention, silver key and gold key. All gold key winners will continue on to the national competition in New York City in the spring of 2018. Sandy High students Emily Davis, Kylee Holder, Haven Russell, Natalie Tammad and Braden Swan all received Gold Keys. Braden Swan loves writing poetry, so his art teacher encouraged him to enter the writing section of the Scholastic Art Awards. Braden won a Gold Key for his poetry titled “Penmanship.”
The Sandy High School art department is very proud of how well Sandy High students did for the seventh time entering the competition, and we look forward to future Scholastic Art awards.
Gold Key individual pieces are currently being shown at Pacific Northwest College of Art through February 24, 2018.
A ceremony for all awardees will be held at Rolling Hills Auditorium in Tualatin February 15, 2018.
