Sandy High School Summer Academy Opportunities 2025

Who is eligible?

Currently enrolled OTSD 8th, 9th, 10th, or 11th grade student

 

Location:

Sandy High School

 

Dates:

July 28-July 31 and August 4-7

 

Times:

AM Session: 8-11 a.m. &/or PM Session: 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

  

Transportation:

Will be provided within OTSD boundaries.

 

Grab & Go Lunches:

Students will be able to grab lunch at the end of the morning session/beginning of the afternoon session. If a student is staying for both the AM/PM Sessions, they will eat lunch on campus. Students can also pack their own lunch. Sandy High School is a closed campus.

Attendance:

It is critical students are at school each day and complete the work to earn the credit.  A student may only miss 1 day of class. If they miss more than 1 day, they no longer have the opportunity to earn the credit for the class. If a student is tardy for more than 30 minutes, that counts as an absence for the day. Students will receive a “W,” withdrawal on their transcript.

Credit:

For in-person classes, students can earn .25 credit while appropriately completing daily work during each day of the session. If a student prefers to earn .5 credit, they will need to complete independent work/projects that will be assigned by the teacher within the first two days of class. The student must inform their teacher of their intent to earn .5 credit by Day 3 of the course.  All students will transcript a grade for any course, including online courses, that they begin.  Grades given will be A, B, C, D, and F.

For online classes a student will be permitted to take 1 online class.

Sessions

Credit: Students can earn .25 credit while appropriately attending and completing daily work during each day of the session.   • Credit Recovery Algebra 1A OR 1B: This class is one semester of Algebra, either 1st or 2nd semester, that includes the topics of number sense, solving equations, graphing, exponents, polynomials, inequalities, factoring, and functions including linear, quadratic, and exponential. Students should expect daily work to be assigned along with periodic projects and tests. A scientific calculator is required. Take the course to recover either the first or second semester of Algebra. Type of credit: Math or elective (0.25 or 0.50 credit) Instructor: Aleta Doss

    Credit Recovery Geometry A OR Credit Recovery Geometry B: This class is the study of visual patterns. Included among the topics in geometry are logic, polygons, congruency, similarity, proofs, polyhedrons, probability, statistics, area, and volume. Students will be expected to use the knowledge gained in Algebra to solve geometric problems. A scientific calculator is required. Take the course to recover your first or second semester of Geometry. Type of Credit: Math or elective (0.25 or 0.50 credit) Instructor: Kayla Grahn

    Credit Recovery LA 9/10: In this course, you will further extend and deepen your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills and explore the thematic concept of culture. Texts could include novels, short stories, poems, essays, or speeches by various authors. You will be  challenged to use evidence from these texts in your written, visual and oral responses.Type of Credit: Language Arts (0.25 or 0.50 credit) Instructor: Kevin Phillips

    Credit Recovery LA 11: In this course, you will further extend and deepen your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Texts could include various works such as poems, short stories, speeches, articles, and novels by major American authors. You will be challenged to connect your learning to American history and use evidence from these texts in your written, visual and oral responses. Type of Credit: Language Arts (0.25 or 0.50 credit) Instructor: Maya Cooney


    Freshman Seminar: Freshman Seminar is designed to ease the transition to high school and provide skills to support student success (academic, social, emotional, etc.) The course will focus on team building for peer-to-peer and student-adult connection, exploration of future goals and the steps needed to achieve them, familiarity with the building and school extracurricular and academic programs, the development of essential soft skills, and the building of overall confidence related to the transition to freshman year. Type of credit: elective (0.25 or 0.50 credit) Instructor: Sarah Bonner

  • Radio Astronomy: Unlock the invisible universe with Radio Astronomy! Ever wonder what the cosmos looks like beyond what our eyes can see? This course dives into the fascinating world of radio astronomy, where we observe and analyze frequencies of electromagnetic radiation to track the movement of stars and galaxies. Get hands-on experience building a shoe horn antenna and accessing powerful tools like
    the SALSA array in Onsala, Sweden to build your own map of our own Milky Way galaxy. Get ready to see the universe in a whole new light! Type of credit: science or elective (0.25 or 0.50 credit) Instructor: Zach Duell

  • Online Classes (Grad Alliance): Students have the opportunity to work at school or at home on an online class that can earn .5 credit. Students may take only 1 online class. Class closes on August 7th at 2:30pm. (If student chooses to work from home, they must have their own reliable wifi and device) (0.50 credit) Instructor: TBD
